The functional wiry coat is the breed’s most distinctive feature. A dog must have a correct coat to be of correct type.

The coat is a double coat. The natural untrimmed coat length varies from 1½ to 6 inches.
The Scottish Terrier should have a broken coat. It is a hard, wiry outer coat with a soft, dense undercoat.
