Introduction to Regular Classes
At an AKC conformation dog show, dogs that have not yet earned their championship compete in regular classes. These classes are the starting point for every championship campaign.
There are seven regular classes:
- Puppy (6–9 Months) — For dogs at least 6 months old but under 9 months on the day of the show.
- Puppy (9–12 Months) — For dogs at least 9 months old but under 12 months.
- 12–18 Months — For dogs at least 12 months old but under 18 months.
- Novice — For dogs that have not yet won three first-place ribbons in Novice, have not won a point toward their championship, and are not champions.
- Bred-by-Exhibitor — For dogs owned and handled by their breeder (or co-breeder).
- American-Bred — For dogs bred and born in the United States.
- Open — Open to any dog of the breed, regardless of age, origin, or past wins. This is often the most competitive class.
Important: Dogs (males) and bitches (females) are always judged separately. The judge works through all seven classes for dogs first, then repeats the process for bitches.
Key Takeaway
Dogs that are not yet champions compete in one of seven regular classes. Dogs and bitches are always judged separately.
